Three Words. Three Different Things.
We use three words almost interchangeably. Job. Trade. Career. The difference matters. It matters more than almost anything else a young man will decide in his twenties.
What a Job Is
A job is a task performed for pay. When the shift ends, the job ends. A job is transactional. This is not a bad thing. A job teaches you how to show up on time, how to take orders, how to work with a crew.
But a job is not usually portable and it does not usually compound. This is not a failure. This is simply what a job is.
What a Trade Is
A trade is a skilled occupation. It is a craft. It is learned, over years, through apprenticeship, mentorship, and thousands of hours of hands-on practice.
A trade does three things that a job usually does not:
- It is portable. A skilled welder can work anywhere.
- It compounds. Trades reward mastery.
- It becomes identity. A man does not merely "have" a trade. He is a welder.
And here is what the culture does not want to admit: skilled tradesmen often out-earn college graduates.
“ Do you see someone skilled in their work? They will serve before kings; they will not serve before officials of low rank.”
Proverbs 22:29What a Career Is
A career is a long-term professional trajectory. It usually requires formal credentials and is tied to advancement, promotion, and status. A career can be a magnificent thing, but it has three costs: upfront investment, less portability, and it can consume more than a trade.
Side by Side
| Job | Trade | Career | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Entry barrier | Low | Medium (apprenticeship) | High (degree/license) |
| Time to mastery | Weeks | Years | Years + formal education |
| Portable | No | Yes — highly | Partly |
| Compounds with age | Rarely | Yes | Often |
| Debt to enter | None | Low (tools) | Often high |
| Outsource risk | High | Low | Medium to high |
"Follow Your Heart" Is Bad Advice
The advice we have been handing young men for fifty years — follow your heart, do what you love, chase your dreams — is bad advice. It is not merely incomplete. It is dangerous.
“ The heart is deceitful above all things and beyond cure. Who can understand it?”
Jeremiah 17:9“ There is a way that appears to be right, but in the end it leads to death.”
Proverbs 14:12“ Follow your heart is the single worst piece of advice given to young people. The heart is not a moral compass. It is a bundle of impulses and appetites, and it will lead you off a cliff if you let it.”
Dennis PragerFind What You Are Good At and Master It
Find what you are good at, and master it.
Not what you love. What you are good at. And then pour your life into becoming great at it.
This advice is not sentimental. It is not poetic. But it works. What you are good at is where you can contribute the most to the world.
HOW TO FIND WHAT YOU ARE GOOD AT
Try things. Hard things. Manual things. Technical things.
Watch what comes easily to you that does not come easily to others. Watch what others ask you for help with.
Then commit. Not forever — but for years. Mastery does not begin until you stop starting over.
What If You Will Never Be Good At Your Dream?
What if you want to be good at something and no matter how hard you try, you will never be good enough? This is a real possibility. It is not fair. But it is true.
Chasing a dream you will never achieve will not lead to a good life. It will lead to misery. It will lead to bitterness.
“ A man’ s pride will bring him low, but the humble in spirit will obtain honor.”
Proverbs 29:23How This Supports Family, Purpose, and Growth
Family
A trade, done we'll, provides steady income, predictable hours, and a sense of identity that his children can be proud of.
Purpose
Purpose is not found in a title. It is found in faithful work done in the place where God put you.
Growth
What you want is a path where growth compounds. Choose the path where your skill deepens, your judgment sharpens, and your value rises.
Your Work Matters
Work is a gift. It is the thing that lets you provide. It is not a punishment. It is a calling.
So do it we'll. Do it honestly. Do it as unto the Lord.
Pick up your tools. Master your craft. Build something real. Your work is not the whole of your life — but it is the engine that drives it.
“ And whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.”
Colossians 3:17
