The Bedrock

Something has gone wrong. We all feel it, even when we can't name it. The men around us are drifting. We see it at the hardware store, at the ballfield, at the dinner table that stays empty. We see it in ourselves, in the quiet hours, when the mask comes off and the question sits there unanswered: what am I actually building?

For a few generations now, American men have been told that the old foundations we're chains. That duty was oppression. That sacrifice was foolishness. That the disciplines our fathers and grandfathers carried — the ones that held families and towns and churches together — we're relics of a darker age.

We couldn't stand on nothing. And we can't. A man without a foundation does not stand taller. He falls further, and he takes more people down with him when he lands.

“ Therefore everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock. The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house; yet it did not fall, because it had its foundation on the rock.”

Matthew 7:24-25

This is not theory. This is the ground under your feet. The Forge cannot shape a man who has nothing to shape. The Workshop cannot equip a man with no spine to carry the tools.

“ Happiness is a moral obligation. We owe it to our children, our spouses, our parents, our friends, and to ourselves, to be as happy as we can be. An unhappy man does not merely suffer alone. He spreads the suffering. A happy man spreads the light.”

Dennis Prager
