Community & Responsibility
Build the bedrock. Truth, character, and the disciplines that hold a man upright when the ground shifts.
A Man Is Not an Island
I want to start with something that men used to know and that we let go of at our own peril. It is not a suggestion. It is a fact, and it was true before any of us we're born and it will be true long after we are gone.
A man is not an individual.
Modern ears hate that sentence. We're marinated in a culture that tells us the highest good is autonomy. There is something true buried in that: every man is a soul made in the image of God, answerable to God before he is answerable to any man.
But that is only half the truth. The other half — the half we dropped — is that every man is also a member. A father, a son, a brother, a neighbor, a citizen. His life is not his own to spend however he likes, because other people are depending on what he does with it.
“ Let each of you look not only to his own interests, but also to the interests of others.”
Philippians 2:4The Obligation
When we say a man has an obligation to his community, we are not saying he should do nice things when he has time. We are saying something much older and much heavier: a man owes his community.
This is not a burden. It is a privilege. It is the thing that makes a man's life mean something beyond the narrow circle of his own comfort. The man who has no obligations has no purpose.
“ We are not here to merely exist. We are here to make a difference — to be a blessing to others, to be useful to God and to man.”
Dennis Prager“ Carry each other’ s burdens, and in this way you will fulfill the law of Christ.”
Galatians 6:2You Are Not a Victim
You are not a victim. No matter how the culture talks about you. No matter how it treats you. None of that makes you a victim. It makes you a man with a job to do.
A victim needs rescue. A man gives it. A victim blames. A man builds. The moment we start seeing ourselves as victims, we have surrendered the very thing that made us men.
We are not lambs. We are not victims. We are the sons of God, and the world is trying to convince us otherwise because a man who knows who he is cannot be ruled.
“ Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go.”
Joshua 1:9You Are Built to Withstand
Men we're made to endure. Not to escape, not to complain, not to demand the world be easier — but to stand. This is not bravado. This is design.
Look at the men of Scripture. Noah built an ark for a hundred years while the world laughed. Abraham left everything on a promise. Moses led a stubborn people for forty years. David hid in caves and refused to kill the man hunting him. Paul was beaten, stoned, shipwrecked, imprisoned, and kept writing.
These men did not break. Not because they we're stronger in themselves. Because they stood on something that could not be moved.
You are the same species. The pressure you are under right now is not bigger than what men have carried before you. Men have carried more. Men have carried worse. And they stood. So can you.
“ No temptation has overtaken you except what is common to mankind. And God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear.”
1 Corinthians 10:13Stand on the Truth and Never Back Down
A man stands on the truth and does not back down. Not when it is popular. Not when it is convenient. Not when the crowd is shouting. Not even when his life is on the line.
This is not arrogance. It is obedience. We stand on the truth because the truth is true, and because we're made to serve it.
“ Be on your guard; stand firm in the faith; be courageous; be strong.”
1 Corinthians 16:13Hope
What this is, is a reminder. A reminder that you we're not made to be a cog in a machine or a problem to be managed. You we're made in the image of God, and the world is starving for men who still believe that.
You are the inheritor of a lineage of faithful men. You are not the end of it. You are the next man in a long line of men who refused to quit.
We're made to stand. So stand.
“ Therefore, my dear brothers and sisters, stand firm. Let nothing move you. Always give yourselves fully to the work of the Lord, because you know that your labor in the Lord is not in vain.”
1 Corinthians 15:58
